Black Eyes and Baseball

For those who have asked to see it...here it is. On June 5th, Eric and our friend from Wichita Falls, Bekah Bond ran into each other full force while playing football in the front yard. Fortunately for Bekah, Eric got the worst of it. After speaking with his doctor on the phone, we were advised to take Eric to the ER. Sure enough, he had a concussion and a huge black eye. This picture was taken the next morning. After lots of rest (being woke up every 2 hours the first night) and Tylenol, he is recovering nicely. At the time of this post, he is all healed up with no trace of the black eye left. What a scare. God is good!

The day after the big collision was T-ball awards. Eric really wanted to go, but he was nervous about what people would say about his eye and the attention it would receive. That afternoon, we decided sunglasses were the answer. After getting to the ceremony, Eric decides he likes Dad's glasses better. So...they switch. I think they both look great!

After much discussion and contemplation, Eric decided to take off the sunglasses and go up and receive his trophy with pride. Overall, he had a great year playing T-ball. Next year, he thinks he's ready for the big leagues. Go Braves!

Happy Memorial Day!

On Memorial Day, our family spent a fun day enjoying the great Utah weather with our friends, the Hendersons. Here we are enjoying the beauty at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. After a picnic, we hiked up to Timpanogos Cave in American Fork Canyon. It was a beautiful day and the canyon was amazing. Too bad the cave tours were all sold out. We'll try again soon.

Our Little Gymnast

Ta-Da!! Sarah gets a ribbon at the Spring Show at Flips on May 25th. She has completed a year of gymnastics and enjoys going every Wednesday. This summer she and Eric will attend seperate classes at Flips for a 5 week summer course. Eric is very excited and Sarah is proud to have her brother with her at the gym. This place is fun!!

AWANA's Spring Program

May 23rd was a big day for the Bomar family. We started with Sarah's preschool program at the Clearfield Library (see below) and ended with the AWANA program at the base chapel. The kids did great and enjoyed the singing, refreshments and awards. I breathed a sigh of relief at the end of the day. Two more programs, which I taught, were completed for the year. Hurray for summer!

Our Sparks group sang several songs from Southside Church of Christ...acappella of course. At first the kids weren't sure about singing without music, but they caught on quick and loved it. They had several favorites like, "I love Jesus better than popcorn" and asked to sing them every week. What fun! I also read a letter from Andy and Melissa Johnson in Burkina Faso, West Africa thanking them for their help and support this past year. Our Big Preschool Show, Starring...Sarah!

Mom and Sarah all dressed up and ready for the big day...the closing program at Barneck Preschool. Dad and Eric came to watch. The kids sang, received certificates and diplomas and had refreshments. A great way to end the year. We are looking forward to returning next year. This time we will be going morning and afternoon sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I will be teaching both sessions and Sarah will get to learn twice as much!

This girl doesn't forget! After promising to get Sarah a "big girl bike" after Daddy came home from Iraq, Sarah cashed in. Tony was only home two days when Sarah asked, "OK, can we go buy my new bike today?" How could a dad resist? After a quick trip to Toys R Us, we came back with this. Sarah loves it!

Happy Spring Break!

Happy Spring Break to our Utah friends. We feel lucky to have had two Spring Breaks this year! This week we stayed close to home, cleaned the house, did laundry (lots of laundry) and, of course, found some time for fun too. Here the kids are enjoying a ride on the Amazon at Jungle Jims in Murray. It was not busy at all, so it made for lots of fun. This time, Sarah rode all the rides and loved it. Her brother even taught her how to drive the bumper cars. Except for Mom's strep throat (again) we had a fun and relaxing week. Hope everyone had a great week too!

The Great Pet Debate

OK, what is up with all the cat hate mail? Must I post my "Top Ten Reasons Why Cats Make Better Pets Than Dogs" list? Here goes:

10. Cats do not need baths, do not shake off, and don't have a "Wet Dog Smell." Gross!
9. Cats do not lick you or slobber on you. Also gross!
8. Cats do not sniff everyone who enters your home. Annoying and embarassing!
7. Cats do not jump on you and knock down small children. Sad!
6. Cats are smaller than dogs and easier to handle. Fun for kids.
5. You do not have to walk your cat in the rain or snow. Did I mention fun?
4. Cats are easy to entertain. String + feather = great entertainment! Fun factor again.
3. Vacations made easy. Food, litterbox, water, see you on Monday!
2. Cats do not bark, wake you up or disturb the neighbors.
1. Cats do not tear up your yard, eat your plants or leave poop to scoop up in the yard.

Obviously, cats win hands down. OK, bloggers, what is the perfect pet?

Our Trip Home

Last week we returned to Utah from our 10 day trip back home to Texas. Thanks to everyone for making our trip so much fun and for your gift of friendship. We were reminded, over and over, how blessed we are to have such wonderful friends and family. I know Tony would have loved spending time with you all as well.

Thanks to everyone who had us into your homes, gave us meals and spent time with us. Thanks for all the gifts too. All our luggage arrived back to SLC with us and the kids are enjoying all of it.

We arrived in Texas just in time for my nephew, Bryant's, 1st birthday party. He is such a beautiful and happy little boy. We all enjoyed spending time with him and were happy to be able to share in his special day. We look forward to getting closer to home one day so we can be more involved in his daily activities. We love you Bryant!!

The kids were able to spend time with both sets of grandparents and with Uncle Joe and Aunt Be. They love you all so much. Thanks for being such an important part of their lives from so far away. Eric has big plans for a tree house at Memaw and Pops house!

We enjoyed every minute of our time in Wichita Falls, even though the weather did not cooperate! We immediately felt like we were home again. It was such a joy to be with our Tenth and Broad family and be welcomed with open arms. The kids ran off to their classes as if they were never away. Sarah, who has the least amount of memories in TX, asked me, "Mom, can we stay here forever?" I answered, "Yes, Sarah, someday we will."

When we returned to Utah, I read this quote which summed up our trip. "Good friends are like angels. You don't have to see them to know they are there." Thank God for my Texas angels!

Happy Birthday to You!!! This Saturday we enjoyed an afternoon at Flips Gymnastics with a combined birthday party for Eric and Sarah. Since they both wanted their party at the same place, why not have double the fun. They both were able to invite 8 friends, have their own invitation, and of course...their own cakes. Eric chose a Spongebob theme, while Sarah opted for a Princess party. Since they both have mutual friends, it worked out for everyone. The kids enjoyed jumping, dancing, flipping and playing games. They played with a parachute, jumped on the trampoline and the girls danced with ribbons. We all had a great time. The hardest part was when Mom had to go home and put the toys together.....we miss our Dad! Thanks to all who came and helped to make our party so much fun!!

Eric rated his first time ice skating as thumbs up! We were invited for a free day of ice skating by a support group at Hill AFB. Sarah stayed with a friend, and Eric and I headed for the rink. It took us forever just to put on our skates. Luckily I had 2 pair of gloves in the van. I forgot how cold it ice skating, especially when you fall down. Eric was a natural!! I had a hard time keeping up with him, which he thought was very funny. He said he may want to try hockey one day. We both had a great time. Eric said it was "a perfect day!"

Winter finally arrived in our front yard! Although it has snowed several times this year, it usually melted before we could get out and enjoy it or it was just too cold to stay outside. Not this time. Wednesday proved to be a perfect day for enjoying the snow. We shoveled the walk, build two snowmen and went sledding. Welcome Winter!

So much for a traditional Christmas. This year our family chose to go sledding! We had a great time at Snowbasin Resort. It was sledding at it's finest...they did all the work. You pay for a tow rope to pull you and your tube up the hill and then you enjoy the ride down. Everyone had their own tube, even Sarah. We later had dinner at the lodge. No cooking! It was a Christmas to remember!

During the Christmas break, Tony and I, along with our friends, Matt and Amy Baker, managed to escape for a day on the slopes. Sarah is still loving her gymnastics class. In fact, she says she wants to be a gymnastics teacher when she grows up "like Miss Katherine." On Thursday, Sarah had a "Holiday Show" at her gym. Eric was so excited to finally get to go and she his sister perform. The kids danced to "Up on the Housetop", then performed various activities for the parents. Here Sarah is carefully walking across the balance beam. She was so excited about the program and having her family there to watch. She kept waving at us and blowing us kisses. We were proud of her too!!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! We had a fun time away from home, with our church family. On Wednesday night, our church has a tradition of meeting for "Pie Night." The idea is that on Thanksgiving you get filled up with all the rest of the meal and don't have room for dessert. The answer? Dessert first of course!! The whole church gets together and brings their favorite desserts. We had more pies than Marie Callender's! Tony made his famous apple pie, of course. Instead of driving home just to drive back down the next morning, we were invited to spend the night with our dear friends, the Bakers. We had a great time. The kids loved having a "sleepover" and all 4 kids had their sleeping bags in the playroom. The next morning Amy and I cooked together then went to the Osborns for lunch. There were about 30 people there, lots of kids and lots of room to run around. Hope you and your family had a great day too! Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Happy Halloween! Sarah (as the purple butterfly) enjoys a fun day at preschool. The kids dressed in costume and visited the neighborhood. It's a tradition that the preschool has enjoyed for several decades. The children go from house to house and sing songs to the elderly neighbors. The kids love it and the neighbors do too! We then enjoyed a day of games, face painting and treats. Happy Halloween everyone!

After weeks of waiting and wiggling...it happened! Tonight, while brushing his teeth, Eric lost his first tooth. He was pleasantly surprised that it did not hurt and hardly bled. Sarah was amazed, to say the least. His tooth is cleaned and tucked inside his tooth fairy pillow that I made. Now we're just waiting to see what happens next.......

Rites of Passage
Why do little girls do it? I knew it was bound to happen. Most mom's say this won't be the last time (it is not the first either, just worse this time) Today, my sweet little girl took it upon herself to cut her own hair.

Yesterday, we were at Great Clips. Since they do not take appointments, it is hit and miss as to how long one will wait to have their turn in the chair. I thought it would be nice to get her bangs trimmed before school next week. I had a little time before we needed to pick up Eric from school, so we stopped in. Unfortunately, many others had the same idea. The wait would be much longer than we could stay. With tears in her eyes, I had to tell Sarah we did not have enough time to get her haircut right then. She really wanted to get her haircut, well actually to get to choose a sucker as her prize at the end, and was quite disappointed.

Today we were all busy working around the house. I took on the huge project of Eric's room, closet and sorting through his clothes (which have magically shrunk since last fall). I had taken Eric's school scissors upstairs to cut something and placed them in the window sill until I went back downstairs (big mistake) In the meantime, Sarah finds the scissors and ....you can guess what happens next. After a few (well, lots of) secret wacks to her beautiful hair she chooses to bring me some remnants. She calmly hands me her hair and says, "Look mom!" I then, not so calmly, yell out, "Tony!!" Since I can not find any scissors and, of course, Sarah's denies cutting her hair, I momentarily think my daughter has received the Davis gene and is losing her hair. We brush it out and, like a shedding dog, Tony collects this ball of hair which used to be on her head. I later find the scissors hidden behind a pillow and Sarah makes her confession.

The photo shows the damage. She has no bangs on one side of her head. The hair has been cut to the root. There is also some missing from each side, although not as noticeable. I have been wanting to grow out her bangs. I guess this is the time to start. Not sure what we will do with her hair. I will try to work with it tomorrow and may have to seek professional help on Monday.

I have seen it happen many times to other little girls. It doesn't make it any easier when it happens to your own. I know...it is only hair....it will grow back...just hope it grows fast!

Eric's Fantastic First Week of First Grade
The first week of school for Eric has came and gone and....Eric loves it!! After 3 long (well, actually 2 hours shorter than usual) days, Eric has came home tired but happy. Unfortunately, his "buddies" from last year have either moved or are in other classes, so making new friends will be important. He's only gone 3 days, so that will come in time. He told me on the first day that Miss Fisher is a very good teacher and that "she is really smart about stuff." That's important! So far, getting up in the mornings has not been a problem and he is up and ready to go! I pray this continues and he will make friends and enjoy first grade. Thanks for all the prayers and thoughts this week. I know it helped!

Back To School Excitement
Hill Field Elementary starts August 24th and 8:50 am. The countdown is on and tension is running high. Every night, without fail, Eric marks another day off the calendar and reports how many days are left. I have not seen my son so excited about something, of importance, in awhile. Eric always makes things up in his head to be really great and then, predictably, is disappointed. I pray, this time, reality holds up to his expectations.

This photo is Eric and Mrs. Probert. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this woman. I know God places people in our paths for a reason. I believe God sent us here (to Utah) for Eric to know and love Mrs. Probert. His outlook of school and himself have dramatically improved since this time last year. This year he is confident, excited and ready for school. Tonight he informed me that I could just drop him off at the door next Wednesday morning. That will not be happening! (Tony plans to leave work to take him to school) A few days ago he was listing the three most significant events of his 6 1/2 years of life. They are: meeting Jimmy (his friend, now in WF) , going to Zion National Park (OK, that might make my list too) and meeting Mrs Probert. Eric, I will have to agree on that one. People come and go throughout ones lifetime. Mrs. Probert is definitely one whom I would like to keep around for awhile.

People often talk about a teacher who has touched their lives. Tony has a few of them. Do you?

Welcome to Life on the Hill!
Oh you bloggers (and you know who you are) I have been reading your postings and have become inspired to join you in this new addiction. Not that I can ever compete with your clever and witty postings (my cousin Courtney) but maybe I can keep you updated on our lives here on the Hill and stay closer to my Texas friends and family. It is now 12:00 AM and I have been in front of this computer for over 2 hours. The house is quiet and, once again, I cannot sleep!!

Since dragging out all the scrapbooking supplies seems a little overwhelming and, well, messy, I'll stick with this for awhile....no cleanup required! We'll see how it goes.....

Thanks for the inspiration you guys. Courtney, you truly have a gift for writing. Keep it up!
